A Case for Christianity

explore CS Lewis' book Mere Christianity to grow in your faith

A CS Lewis Book Study

During the upheaval of WWII, C.S. Lewis, an Oxford professor, was asked to give a series of radio broadcasts to encourage the English. He decided to write a series of talks called “The Case for Christianity”. These talks became so popular that Lewis turned them into a book entitled Mere Christianity.

This book has become one of the most influential Christian books of the last century. Lewis' writing is wise and deep and yet simple and straight forward. In addition, as a former atheist, he engages our doubts with empathy and patience.

As we study Lewis’ argument and articulation of the Christian faith, we will learn how to remain strong and hopeful in a hostile age as well as learn how to communicate our faith with compassion and tact.

How do we know God exists?

September 15,2021

Book 1: Right and wrong as a clue to the meaning of the universe

We cannot see God, so how do we know he exists? Lewis pointed to the universal law that recedes in every human heart. It is a universal standard that we all know, and yet none of us is actually living up to this law. Lewis argues that this universal law points to an ultimate Law Giver. In this class, we will study the steps in Lewis’ argument for the existence of God.

September 22, 2021

Book 2: What Christians believe

There are many different religions in the world. How do we know that Christianity is the true religion? Lewis says that all religions have some truth in them, and yet Christianity is not just about dispensing more truth. It is concerned with the person and work of Jesus. In this class, we will study Lewis’ explanation of Jesus as the main evidence for Christianity.

What is the goal of Christianity?

October 6, 2021

Book 4: Beyond personality, or First steps in the doctrine of the Trinity

Lewis did not see the goal of Christianity to escape this world, nor did he believe Christianity was just about improving society right now. Lewis believed that Jesus’ resurrection opened up a whole new way to be human. In this class, we will look at Lewis’ explanation of the goal of Christianity and its practical implications for our day-to-day lives.
